Roger H. Smith, age 87, of Hilton Head, South Carolina and formerly of Brookville, Indiana, died January 22th 2018 at the home of his daughter June Ritter in Orlando Florida.
He was born and grew up in New Jersey, where he graduated from Ridgewood High School. He attended Indiana University. After receiving his bachelor's degree, he joined the US Army and served in Japan as a Russian translator. After his army service he earned a degree in law from Indiana University.
On June 16, 1956 he married Patricia Blossom of Richmond Indiana, who passed away June 24, 2014. The family moved to Brookville in 1959.
Roger practiced law in Brookville for the next 37 years. He was for many years prosecutor and assistant prosecutor for Franklin County. While he served his clients in most aspects of law in his private practice, he most enjoyed the challenges of criminal trial work and devoted himself to that almost exclusively in the latter years of his career.
He was a longtime member of Brookville United Methodist Church, and of the Harmony Masonic Lodge #11 F. & A.M. Roger was deeply read in the history of the Civil War and visited nearly all of the battlefields that have been preserved. After his retirement he divided his time between Brookville and his home in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Survivors include four children, Britt H. Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio, Anne Archuleta of Centennial, Colorado, Craig F. Smith of Ashford, Connecticut and June Ritter of Orlando, Florida; five grandchildren, Andrea Scherpenberg and Eric Smith, Matthew, Andrew and Nicholas Ritter; and two great-grandchildren, Savannah Scherpenberg and Maxwell Crawford.
