Joan M. May, age 96, of Brookville, Indiana died Friday, March 27, 2026 at Hospice of Cincinnati Blue Ash, following a brief illness.
Born September 22, 1929, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Adam J. & Henrietta (Wyss) Schmitt. She became the wife of Otto Michael May on October 1, 1960, and he preceded her in death on March 7, 2012.
She was a graduate of Central Catholic High School with the class of 1947. She worked at DeKalb High School for over 25 years as a custodian.
She is a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Brookville, and a former member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Waterloo, Indiana. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella in Brookville, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, as well as the Brookville Garden Club. In her leisure time she enjoyed cooking and gardening.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary (Dirk) Cork of West Chester, Ohio; a son, John (Kathy) May of Auburn, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Meghan Sorrells, Mitchell Sorrells, Justin (Sarah) May, Jeremy (Macey) May, Austin (Bentley) May, Braelyn May, Paizley Catalano; three step-grandchildren, Brittany (Justin) Stetler, Briana (Damon) Cooper, Bridgit Chisholm.
In addition to her parents, and husband Otto, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Jean Schmitt, Mary Alice Steinacker; and her brother, Fr. Adam D. Schmitt.
Family & friends may visit from 4 until 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home, 1025 Franklin Avenue, Brookville, where the Daughters of Isabella will Pray the Holy Rosary at 7:00 P.M..
There will also be visitation from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 1098 Co. Road 39, Waterloo, Indiana 46793.
Rev. Tony Steinacker will officiate the Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, April 11, 2026, 11:00 A.M. at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Waterloo, Indiana. Burial will follow in St. Michael Catholic Cemetery in Waterloo.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Brookville Garden Club or the Friends of the Franklin County Animal Shelter .
