Obituary

Howard Edward 'Jack' Roemer, age 87, of Thomson, Illinois died peacefully Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at Select Specialty Hospital, surrounded by his wife and children.

Born September 1, 1936 in Brookville, Indiana he was the youngest of three children born to the late Howard W. & Nora M. (Spenny) Roemer.  He was a United States Army Veteran of the Berlin Crisis, and served proudly until his honorable discharge.

A native of Brookville, Indiana, he graduated from the former Brookville High School with the class of 1954, and continued his education at Ball State University where he earned his BS in Education, later earning his Masters Degree from Northern Illinois University.

On June 14, 1959 he and the former Sue 'Annalyn' Stockberger were united in marriage and she survives.

Jack spent his career helping boys and girls of all ages, as a counselor and teacher for 48 years.  Following his passion for sports he coached basketball, football, track, baseball and cross country for 50 years as well.  He loved to teach and help those around him, and he found a career that allowed him to do just that, spending his life changing others.

He was devoted to church all of his life, and shared those values with his family.  He spent every morning strengthening his faith with his wife, reading the bible together, and praying for those around them.  In the restlessness of retirement, he followed his passion in the church and became an ordained minister and led family services through conference calls over the last 7 years, something he greatly looked forward to every Sunday.  He spent most, if not all, of his time with family; and was a loving, caring, honorable and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.

A family man to his core, Jack leaves to cherish his memory; his wife of 65 years, Sue 'Annalyn'; three children, Phyllis (Chris) Harris of Mulberry, Florida, Eric 'Rick' (Elaine) Roemer of Rensselaer, Indiana, and John (Debbie) Roemer of Manville, Illinois; 11 grandchildren, Jason (Kelsie), Nate (Anna), Kaitlynn, Nicholas, Isaac, Kayley, Ryan, Josh, Calvin, Aydan, Zandar; 8 great-grandchildren; Harper, Mila, Avery, Donna, Elise, Maesie, Elizabeth and Luke; as well as numerous nieces & nephews.
