Herschel A. Ertel, age 95, of Cedar Grove, Indiana died Saturday, October 31, 2015 at his residence in Cedar Grove. Born December 10, 1919 in Spades, Indiana he was the son of the late Harry & Frances (Risselman) Ertel. He was a US Army Veteran of World War II, serving with the 349TH Infantry as a Staff Sargeant, earning a Purple Heart. He was united in marriage to the former Agnes Sauerland, and she survives. He was a member of Holy Guardian Angels Catholic Church. Herschel was retired from the former Philco-Ford in Connersville, Indiana where he had been employed for over 40 years. In his leisure time he enjoyed riding his bicycle, and working on lawnmowers. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Besides Agnes, his loving wife of over 58 years, survivors include five children, Cindy (David) Kaiser, Randy (Billie) Ertel, Sandy Ertel, Rick (Renee) Ertel all of Cedar Grove, Indiana, and Pam (Steve) Combs of West Harrison, Indiana; 14 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis Moeller of Hamilton, Ohio and Viola (Albert) Grossman of Batesville, Indiana; as well as a brother Dan (Edwina) Ertel of Batesville, Indiana. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Eileen Salatin & three brothers Harry Ertel, Mark Ertel, and Jule Schomber. Family & friends may visit from 4 until 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home, 1025 Franklin Avenue, Brookville; where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 P.M. The Very Rev. Sean Danda will officiate the Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, November 5, 2015, 10:30 A.M. at Holy Guardian Angels Chapel, 405 US Highway 52, Cedar Grove, Indiana. Burial with Full Military Graveside Honors by the Bernard Hurst Post #77 of the American Legion will follow in Holy Guardian Angels Cemetery.
